NeuroSky

NeuroSky is a leading biosensor company, making brain-computer interface technologies available to developers across a wide range of industries. Their biosensors are used in hundreds of body and mind health products. Their EEG solution, specifically, digitizes analog electrical brainwaves to power games as well as education and research applications.

In partnership between The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and NeuroSky, I have worked on a variety of game designs which utilized the NeuroSky EEG headset. These designs included:

Mind Battle, in which the player controlled a wizard and the player’s ability to concentrate, detected by the headset, was converted into mana points that allowed him or her to cast various spells by drawing magic symbols;

Mind Flow, which synchronized with the audio played by the user and provided a relaxing and emotionally pleasing experience where her concentration or relaxation influenced the behavior of on-screen underwater creatures;

Mind Fly, in which the player’s concentration translated into power that made a small paper plane fly and perform various tricks in the air;

Mind Doll, which was essentially an avatar generation tool that took a “fingerprint” of the user’s brainwave activity and generated a special and unique character for her;

and Mind Factory, in which the player was in charge of a factory that produced Mind Dolls and his objective was to use concentration to pull matching body parts together.

Mind Doll, in particular, is worth mentioning as it eventually turned into a much larger project (see the separate entry in my portfolio).
